Marianna Lourba

Visual Artist

Marianna Lourba, a significant figure of contemporary Greek art, redefines geometric abstraction, shaping a topological version grounded in the architectural typologies of the Cyclades. At the centre of her practice lies the transcription of insular architectural features, such as walls, curves, openings, and volumes, into a strict geometric vocabulary.

Her compositions are organised through superimposed planes, curvilinear truncations, and relief volumes, which constitute hierarchised spatial structures. The use of limited colours and clean lines reinforces the structural coherence of the surfaces, while the mixed technique on wooden constructions highlights the materiality of the composition.

At the level of methodology, Lourba’s practice is grounded in the observation and documentation of the architectural volumes of the Cycladic space, the distillation of their fundamental morphological elements, and their reconstitution into new compositions.
Freed from referential content, the compositions retain their spatial logic.

Lourba studied Art and Design at Middlesex University in London and completed postgraduate studies in Visual Communication and Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan.
She has presented five solo exhibitions and has participated in more than twenty group exhibitions in Athens, New York, Tokyo, Arezzo, and Orvieto. Her work has been honoured with distinctions from the DESTE Foundation and Mont Blanc, and is included in significant private collections in Greece and abroad.

She lives and works in Athens.
